Members tried out the ideas and those who thought they had struck on a winning recipe submitted their 'inventions' for judgment on Friday 12th February. A panel of sausage lovers evaluated fourteen different varieties represented by 30 separate entries on the way to selecting the best.
The winning idea turned out to be the most unlikely combination of pork and caramel. Many of the judges doubted the product would be in contention but every one of them when they tasted it, was impressed with the submission.
SFMTA are well aware that the addition of caramel does little to enhance a healthier image for sausages but the intrigue and the desire to taste will attract sales. When the customer tastes the product we are convinced that they will be as pleasantly surprised as all our judges were.
The producer of the best sausage will receive a prize of £500 for his/her recipe which will be the possession of the Promoter. The consumer entrant who suggested the sausage that ultimately wins will receive a prize of £250. The names of these winners will be announced in March in the media.
The winning recipe was distributed to every Craft Butcher in Scotland with the March newsletter in time for you all to make this winning new invention during National Butchers Week in March 2010.
SFMTA would like to use this story to get members column inches in their local newspapers. If you are going to make the Pork and Caramel Sausage for National Butchers Week, tell SFMTA and we will do a press release for you and arrange a photocall at your shop on Thursday 11th March. A list of all the local newspapers we are aware of has been compiled. We will allocate members a local paper on a first come first served basis.
