The only treatment is a strict lifelong gluten-free diet. People can develop coeliac disease at any age.
Coeliac disease has a range of symptoms that affect different people in different ways with gut symptoms typical but other parts of the body can also be affected.
The average time from onset of symptoms to diagnosis is a staggering 13 years which means those with undiagnosed and untreated coeliac disease are at a high risk of their performance and attendance at work being disrupted.
While it affects 1 in every 100 people, only around a quarter are diagnosed leaving around 40,000 people in Scotland and half a million across the UK with undiagnosed coeliac disease.
Coeliac UK has developed a short presentation – delivered by trained volunteers who all have coeliac disease – to raise awareness of the condition so that anyone suffering from the signs and symptoms can get medical help sooner rather than later.
To arrange an awareness session please contact Myles Fitt, Scotland Lead at Coeliac UK on 0131 220 8342 or at [email protected]
