However, they present increased adverse risk. Should flame from an incipient fire penetrate the metal skin of such a panel and ignite the insulation, it is guaranteed that the building will be lost. This is because the insulation is shielded from fire fighting water by the outer metal skin and it has its own oxygen supply to support combustion.
Sometimes, the expanded plastic foam insulation incorporates a fire retardant, but this is totally ineffective whilst other materials are burning in close proximity.
It should also be understood that the combustion of this material results in the evolution of excessive volumes of cyanide based smoke. Therefore, when the Fire Brigade are satisfied that lives are no longer at risk, their efforts will be directed from external fire fighting positions to prevent fire spread to neighbouring buildings or facilities. To minimise this risk
• Regular inspections will be initiated at premises where they have been used and wherever insulation is visible, it will be concealed by metal plating.
• Wherever possible, existing composite panels will be replaced with alternatives such as rockwool lined panels.
• New projects will not involve use of composite panels.
