Consultation on removal of voluntary beef labelling

The Scottish Government has written to us to let us know that the European Commission has recently tabled a proposal to remove the existing notification requirement and approval procedure for voluntary beef labelling but the existing compulsory beef labelling provisions in Council Regulation 1760/2000 would remain in force.

The proposal Document is available on the Commission website – (COM
(2011) 525 final) The proposed deletion of the existing voluntary labelling provisions is contained in Article 1 (14) of the proposal. The Scottish Government are seeking initial views from stakeholders across the industry about this proposal, which is due to be discussed again in Brussels on 25 October.  

Similar exercises are being undertaken in England. They would like to get an understanding of your opinion on the move and how this would affect you financially. Your comments by 21 October 2011 would be greatly appreciated.
