The SDAP review examined the progress and impacts between 1996 and 2005. As Professor Tim Lang put it “review of what turned out not to be progress”.

Tim Lang pointed out that the review was looking for improvements in the Scottish Diet but he said that no changes were yet showing up. He asked “Why do we eat sludge and enjoy it?” The SDAP makes all the right noises, the choice of food has increased but the typical diet still includes far too much processed, prepared junk food.

He claimed that the ability to cook and the inclination to cook had shown serious decline and claimed that if current trends continue obesity will wipe out all the other improvements. Obesity is global, largely due to overconsumption driven by extensive marketing of products composed of milk fat, soya oil and alcohol – energy dense foods with high levels of sugar. “All but the determined minority make the wrong choices all the time”.
