Drinking on the job

Unfortunately consumption of alcohol whilst on duty or on company premises is no longer seen as a gross misconduct issue by tribunals. They are continually emphasising that gross misconduct is a rare thing.

Obviously consuming alcohol at work is a health and safety risk and has to be taken seriously. You could play the part of the understanding employer and try to help your employee's alcohol problem.
