Financial Incentives to enrol trainees
A financial incentive of up to £2,000 is being made available to employers who start trainees on an apprenticeship programme.
On Friday 6th November, Skills Development Scotland agreed to fund Scottish Meat Training starts (anywhere in Scotland) under a new scheme that is intended to encourage employers to create apprentice jobs in specific key sectors or sectors particularly impacted by the economic downturn. These places are going fast so read on now!
The funding is only available for a short period of time – up until 26 March 2010 to encourage new Modern Apprenticeship starts as early as possible. Only a limited number of apprenticeships will be supported with this funding assistance and will be on a first come/first served basis.
A one-off payment of up to £2000 is available to encourage small and medium sized businesses (up to 250 employees) to invest in a
16-19 year old apprentice in the food and drink sector.
A one-off payment of up to £1000 is available to encourage small and medium sized businesses (up to 250 employees) to invest in a

To be eligible for support the employee must be a new start on the Apprenticeship Programme (i.e. not yet registered) although they may be currently employed in a different role by the employer.
Who is not eligible?
Any 16-19 year old Apprentice who was registered on the Apprenticeship Programme prior to Friday, 6th November 2009.
Any 20+ year old Apprentice who was registered on the Apprenticeship Programme prior to Monday, 11th January 2010.
What conditions need to be met by an employer?
If the employer has made redundancies in the same occupation since 1st April 2008 an explanation will need to be provided on the application form to indicate why there has been a change since then to make the company and jobs more sustainable.
The funding should not be used to displace an existing apprentice.
The employer must agree a contract with the apprentice prior to payment being released.
For 16-19 year old starts £2000 will be paid at the start of training but must be paid back if the agreement is terminated.
For older starts £1000 will be paid at the start of training but must be paid back if the agreement is terminated.
Initial enquiries from members should be made to Claire at Scottish Meat Training on 01738 637785.
