Each Aberdeenshire town and village it seems supports a top class butcher and Alford is no different.
It is just outside Alford between Tough and Craigievar that it is claimed that the Aberdeen Angus breed of cattle originated. The village of approximately 2000 is famous for its Transport Museum and as the place that singer/songwriter Emeli Sande went to school. Alford is also where Graeme Barber runs a butchers shop and it is one that the locals can be equally proud of. The shop sits at the west end of the town and stands out no matter how you approach.
Sitting back off the road the building has an Alpine look with its A-shaped roof that no doubt serves the same winter purpose given its proximity to those snow affected places that are a feature of radio road reports from November to May – Rhynie, Dufftown, Corrgarth, Ballater and Banchory.
