Health and Wellbeing OOH Sub Group – September 2017

Represented British Hospitality Association, Scottish Licensed Trade Association, Scottish Tourism Alliance, FDF Scotland and SFMTA. Apologies from Scottish Grocers Federation and Scottish Bakers.

Concern historically has been on marketing of goods high in sugar, fat and salt. Experiences suggest a need to be smart on engagement.
FDF recognise that they are not the experts on the OOH sector.
Good Food Nation Bill sits apart from the Obesity Strategy.

What is the OOH sub group purpose?
Possibly a short term group, responding to Government.
Strategy is going to be announced mid September, consultation in mid October.

What do we need to do and cover?
Minimise the impact of the Obesity Strategy on our members.
Project to support SMEs in the OOH sector – scope is huge.

See FSS npd Report 'An Overview of the out of home market in Scotland.' (Link below)

This is not an issue just for the trade bodies around the table. Lots of others e.g Fish Friers who need to be more engaged than we do. The OOH group cannot represent the other views. Scottish Retail Consortium need to be included.

Needs a more gentle pace. Salt campaign was a success because it was gradual and done quietly behind the scenes. Need to focus on educating the public e.g children think spaghetti is a vegetable, fish fingers are made of chicken, tomatoes grow under the ground. Education is what is required.

Industry can offer smaller portions, reduced fat etc
Licensed Trade and Hospitality are actually ahead of the others in the OOH sector. Their members do not think the customers going out for a treat will pay any attention to it.

What we can do in a difficult situation:-
Explain what our stakeholders response is.
Understand what the impact of the strategy is on our stakeholders.
Proactive element but it is in reality a societal problem.

Felt that FSS should hold a round table approach and identify where they feel the problem lies. This needs to happen ahead of consultation process.
