Health surveillance could be something as simple as training a supervisor to inspect the hands of workers where there is a known risk of dermatitis. Or it could be something more sophisticated – e.g. lung function testing where there is exposure to a substance that is known to cause asthma. Where health surveillance is needed a health record should be kept for each employee.
Monitoring of airborne exposure levels and health surveillance are not alternatives to controlling exposure, but they do help to monitor the effectiveness of the control measures that are used.
