HI Health was first established in 1999 to pioneer a cattle health scheme in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. The boundaries have since been broadened to include all livestock farmers within the UK. The scheme was modelled on existing farmer led schemes in Scandinavia and other European countries that are ahead of the UK in terms of disease eradication.
Their farmer led Board of Directors consists of five farmers, two vets and one freelance agricultural adviser with a representative from their two presents scheme contractors. Hi Health is administered and promoted by Orkney Livestock Association (OLA) whilst Biobest Laboratories carry out the blood testing and provide additional veterinary support. This mix of representatives covers all sectors of the industry involved with running a successful health scheme whilst remaining farmer led.
