John Vallance

The firm of John Vallance was established in the 19th century and has been run by the Neilson family for over 100 years. The business was originally based in the Glasgow Fish Market, Clyde Street on the banks of the River Clyde. In 1977 the Fish Market moved to Blochairn to be part of the Fruit and Fish Market complex.

Over the years, the firm has evolved to meet the changing needs of the fish industry. Originally John Vallance catered for a large number of retail shops in the Glasgow area, selling mainly whole fish to Fishmongers. In the years between 1950 and 1977 the Glasgow Fish Market was a thriving trading centre where large numbers of people gathered in the early morning to buy and sell.

During this time, the firm under the stewardship of Bobby and Iain Neilson started to sell block fillets and salmon and this together with the core business of whole fish led to the firm expanding rapidly throughout the period.

John Vallance has always had a poultry department but in the late 1970s an opportunity arose to purchase George Clunes, a firm long associated with the poultry market. This gave John Vallance the ability to access a more varied range of product and a whole new customer base.

Today we are able to offer not only a wide variety of seafood but also an extensive range of poultry and game. Delivery is available six days a week throughout West and Central Scotland.

The current partners Donald, Douglas and Allan Neilson have many years of experience in the trade and would be delighted to answer any enquiries that you have. Please contact us by telephone on 0141 552 2825, by fax on 0141 553 2474 or by email [email protected]
