First Aid Box Checks by EHOs
We have had reports from members that EHOs are including within their recent inspections a check on first aid boxes. Specifically checking dates on all contents.
Our Health and Safety advisors, The National Health and Safety Company, have advised all members to check that all contents are up to date.
Below is the guidance from them.
First aid boxes and dates of products.
Under legislative guidance if there is a date on an item, then everything must be in date. I.e. bandages, plasters, dressings, eye wash etc.
The date is there to ensure people check and update the contents as required.
Providing the contents are in original sealed packing they should remain sterile, the only exception to this and one we would encourage everyone to ensure they are updated regularly are the eye wash liquids as you can get some plastic leeching from the containers.
When we undertake site audits we always check the first aid boxes to ensure dates are current and contents suitable I.e. no pills, potions, open ointments that could possibly cause cross contamination.
Should clients change out of date contents, one of our suggestions not to throw sealed dressings etc out but to donate to the local boys brigade, girls brigade, scouts or other groups that they could use for first aid practice.
