Update on Bird Flu Derogations for Thawed Poultry

You may have noticed the media covering the outbreak of bird flu in Lanarkshire.

Scottish Craft Butchers have regular engagement with the Scottish Government through our participation on the Monthly Meat Industry Forum and the Animal Health and Welfare Committee.

At the last Monthly Meat Industry Forum, we asked whether there would be a derogation to allow Poultry farmers to go to slaughter early and freeze birds, should bird flu become an issue in the lead up to the festive trade.

We were assured that the legal mechanism is in place to allow this to happen then, allow retail premises to sell “thawed” poultry in the lead up to Christmas. This has been in place in the past.

Should the Scottish Government initiate the derogation, then we will inform our members immediately.
