A RECORD entry has been received for the 11th World Scotch Pie Championship it has been revealed.
Eighty butchers (46) and bakers (34) – 79 of them from Scotland – will bring their pies to be judged at Carnegie College, Dunfermline, on Tuesday, November 10 (from noon).
The one English entrant is Graeme Trotter from Seahouses in Northumberland.
Paul Boyle of Boghall Butchers, Bathgate, West Lothian, is the defending champion and Paul, who also won in 2005, is in the entry list for this year.
The popular competition aims to boost standards in the industry and Buckhaven-based baker and butcher, Alan Stuart, the event organiser, said: “We're delighted to confirm that 80 companies have entered this year. Last year it was 79.
“We're also encouraged to see a number of new entrants, 15 in total, and everything is ready for the judging on Tuesday.”
Sausage rolls, bridies and speciality product awards are also up for grabs.
Among the speciality pies is a five-a-day pie and arguably the “world's hottest pie”.
The five-a-day pie is being developed by Jim Paterson of Kassey's Kitchen, Cowdenbeath.
One of his two daughters, Lissa (cor), who works in his busy shop, is a vegetarian and she urged her father to come up with an-all vegetable pie when the entry form arrived recently.
Jim said: “We won the savoury award with our lamb and mint pie last year and it was Lissa who urged me to think about developing a vegetarian pie.
“The Government are urging healthy eating and this is our contibution. We're still working on it and have not finally decided on the ingredients.
“However, we're considering vegetables like carrots, peas, turnips, celery along with a tasty sauce.
“The judging is on Tuesday and we'll have it on sale to customers on Tuesday.”
The “world's hottest pie” is being worked on by bakers at R T Stuart of Buckhaven. Many of them are curry enthusiasts and love a tasty vindaloo.
Alan Stuart, who is managing director of R T Stuart, said: “We noted that National Curry Week this year is from November 22 to 28 and the championship awards presentation is on Wednesday, November 25.
“The guys thought it would be a good idea to go one better than a vindaloo and so we're using phaal curry, apparently three times the strength of that curry.
“In developing the pie two men have cried and one has felt faint but we feel there is a market for the pie.”
