Scott Brothers, Dundee – May 2010

One of the country's largest butchers has re-located in Dundee City Centre. The lease on their existing shop in the Forum Centre ran out in May but Scott Brothers were well prepared since they had opened a replacement in a superior site 500 yards away six months earlier.

The Scott Brothers butchers, poulterers and delicatessen breathed new life into the old Rattray's jewellers shop premises at 32 Nethergate, making their quality Scottish food easily accessible to anyone who is working or shopping in the city centre.

Scott Brothers were established in 1935 by the grandfather of the current partners, George and Scott Jarron. Since then, the company has enjoyed the support of customers from all over Tayside, Perthshire and Fife and today has premises in Strathmartine Road and Brook Street, Broughty Ferry in addition to the smart new unit in the Nethergate.

Almost all the ground floor of the seven metres by ten metres new shop is dedicated to selling. The two stretches of Eurocryor cabinets give the reassurance of total separation between cooked and raw product and on the stainless steel rear wall there is a rotisserie and all the latest equipment to cook up hot food to take away. Baro lighting is used to great effect throughout and in the basement there are two walk in chills, a walk in freezer and staff facilities.
Two supporting pillars challenged the design but George and Scott worked with Broughty Ferry interior designer, Gordon Walker to come up with the best solution possible. Most of the ideas and concepts were the brothers' but the designer pulled it all together and also struck on the rich looking black and wood finish. Local contractors were used as much as possible with joinery contractors Oastlers providing the behind counter furniture. Watco supplied the refrigeration, tiling and plumbing.

Open 8.30am until 5.30pm, customers in the Nethergate can choose from an amazing range of products, from ready-to-heat and frozen meals to famous pies from the in-house bakery, all of which are delivered by the company's own fleet of refrigerated vans. The new shop boasts a hot food counter serving a great selection of lunchtime treats such as soup, pies, macaroni, chilli, freshly made hot and cold sandwiches and burger rolls.

Quality has long been at the forefront of what Scott Brothers does, and a commitment to providing the best meat available to customers is the company's top priority. Beef is sourced live at Forfar mart and from Ian Sim, Kincraig Farm, Brechin, pork from Hatton Farm Carnoustie, and lamb from Angus and Perthshire are carefully sourced and prepared in association with St Andrews Abattoir Co Ltd, meaning that Scott Brothers customers can be assured that they are buying the finest Scotch meats. A low carbon footprint and dedication to quality and local produce are what the team at Scott Brothers believes sets them apart from the big supermarkets.

The business has been great believers in promoting offers with the use of A3 sized posters but the new shop also uses seven purpose designed blackboards to explain their deals and specials. A LCD screen is used to portray recipe ideas.

Scott Brothers are pleased to give their customers an alternative to their Strathmartine road shop. The city centre shop provides the opportunity to pop in on the way home from work to pick up something tasty for dinner, whether to enjoy cooking and eating some top-quality local meat or take advantage of one of the ready-to-heat meals prepared by the cooks in Scott's Kitchen.

The staff at Scott Brothers in the Nethergate are extremely welcoming to customers. Their helpful and relaxed attitude is now attracting both old and new to their shop.

They offer the same friendly, expert service that has become the mainstay of the company for the last 75 years.

There is absolutely no doubt that Scott Brothers has the products, confidence and enthusiasm to serve the good people of Dundee well into the future.
