Scottish Borders Abattoir has intimated its intention to enter into a joint venture with Shotts abattoir, following a long running association with its owners the Chapmans.
This will involve stopping the slaughter of cattle and sheep at Galashiels. Galashiels will continue to kill pigs and will retain its full slaughtering license for the three species along with their cutting, chilling and carcase haulage facilities.
Borders beef and lamb purchased at St Boswells will be taken on a Monday directly from the market to Shotts. Shotts abattoir will kill on a Tuesday and the carcases will be returned to Galashiels.
This move will enable Scottish Borders Abattoir to retain their current service for their customers who will not be disadvantaged in any way, charges will remain the same.
George Deans was positive about the change and believes it is the best way to ensure the long term viability of the service provided to retail butchers. It will be very much business as usual. In the longer term it will delay increasing costs because of the greater economies of scale possible through using Shotts.
Farmers with animals for private kill will be able to book through Scottish Borders Abattoir as they do at present, who will arrange for the haulage and slaughter of the livestock, enabling farmers to either have their carcases delivered or to collect them from Galashiels retaining this important service for the farming community.
