The WHSWR state that readily accessible, suitable and sufficient sanitary conveniences must be provided. This sanitary accommodation must be adequately ventilated and lit, kept clean and maintained in an orderly condition. Separate conveniences for male and female workers must be provided except where the convenience is in a separate room, the door of which is capable of being secured from the inside.
Under regulation 21 of the WHSWR, suitable and sufficient washing facilities (including showers if required by the nature of the work or for health reasons) should be provided at readily accessible places. The wash basins should have running hot and cold, or warm water and be large enough for workers to wash hands, face and forearms. Where the work is particularly strenuous or dirty, or results in contamination of the skin by harmful or offensive materials, then showers or baths should be provided.
The sanitary and washing facilities do not have to be within the workplace, but should if possible be within the building. If arrangements are made for the use of someone else's facilities, then the provider should also meet the requirements of the Regulations. Only under exceptional circumstances will the use of public facilities be acceptable. Special provision should be made for any worker with a disability to have access to suitable facilities.

| Number of workers | 1-5 | 6-25 | 26-50 | 51-75 | 76-100 |
| Number of water closets | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 |
| Number of washstations | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 |
Note: For workplaces with over 100 workers, one additional water closet should be provided for every 25 people above 100 (or fraction of 25).

| Number of workers | 1-15 | 16-30 | 31-45 | 46-60 | 61-75 | 76-90 | 91-100 |

Note: An additional water closet for every 50 men (or fraction of 50) above 100 is adequate.
All sanitary conveniences within food premises to be provided with adequate natural or mechanical ventilation.
