“Grass fed”
In recognition that the Scottish climate does not lend itself to year long grazing on good pasture we have approved claims where for part of the year the animals are being fed inside provided we can be satisfied that the stock are still being fed foodstuff derived from grass, namely hay and silage.
The available resource does not permit us the scope to carry out on-farm verification checks. However during labelling checks at point of slaughter reference is made to the documents which accompany the livestock to the processing plant. These will give details of the type of feeding used when finishing stock. e.g. GM free, fed on grass or grass derivates, traditional feeding.
There are 3 companies approved for the term “Grass Fed”. They are Buccleuch Scotch Beef, Donald Russell and Puddledub Buffalo. They have all been verified by SFQC.
